GETTING MOM SETTLED IN
Before your foster dog gives birth, it’s ideal to let her get settled into her new environment. She will need:
Spend lots of time with mom in her space, so that she is able to get used to you and trust you. This will be very important when the big day arrives! Go for short, slow walks around the yard. Don’t go far from home in case you have missed signs of impending labour. Pregnant moms aren’t easy to carry!
Fosters are encouraged to create their very own Facebook page for Mom and babies. This is a great way for potential adopters to follow the pups as they grow!
Before your foster dog gives birth, it’s ideal to let her get settled into her new environment. She will need:
- A quiet space of her own;
- A place where kids and other pets won’t be able to get near her;
- Whelping box (hard-sided kiddy pools work well, as long as mom has adequate space to lie down comfortably. Larger moms may need one built.)
- Somewhere to go to the bathroom; the last few days, she might not be able to hold it for long!
- Free access to water and good quality puppy food.
