What Not to Do
Sometimes as a new foster parent, you might be unsure about what you can and can't do with your temporary friend. Below are a list of common things that you should not do with your foster.
- Don’t take your foster out for walks or to the dog park before consulting with a staff member. Many of our dogs, even adults, come in without the proper vaccinations. Once your foster is fully vaccinated, you can take them out for a day on the town!
- Puppies under the age of 12 weeks should at no time be walked or taken off property to play. They are young and could easily pick up a serious disease such as Parvo. If you are fostering a puppy, they are not able to go for walks or to the dog park until they've had their 3 Parvo/Distemper shots minimum
- If you are going on vacation, please contact a D.R.E.A.M. staff member to arrange for your foster to be placed in a temporary home, don’t ask a friend or family member to watch them without first consulting a staff member. This goes for all foster parents as well- contact the rescue or association you are fostering with and ask what their policy is, and they will likely find a safe and known place for your foster to hang out until you come back
- If you know of someone interested in a dog, please send them through the proper channels! Before a dog is able to have a meeting things such as reference checks and an application must be filled out. The process helps to make sure that the potential adopters would be a good fit for your foster
